Channel 4
Channel 4 is a not-for-profit broadcaster operating in the UK. It was established in 1982 as a publisher-broadcaster required to commission original content from the independent-production sector. Its core public service channel, Channel 4, is a free-to-air service funded predominantly by advertising and sponsorship. Under its unique statutory remit, Channel 4 is charged with providing a broad range of programming which, in particular:
- demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes
- appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society
- makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value
- exhibits a distinctive character
Channel 4 also operates a number of other services, including the free-to-air digital television channels E4, FilmFour and More4; and an expanding range of online services at channel4.com, including 4oD (video on demand service) and the broadband documentary service 4Docs.
